Throughout Massachusetts, Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician Training Programs are offered at Health Training Center locations in Attleboro, Braintree, Charlestown, Stoughton, and Worcester. An increased demand for healthcare workers, including Cardio-Phlebotomy Technicians, has grown as healthcare technology moves into the future and the need for support staff grows.
The Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician program at Health Training Center can be completed in approximately 15 weeks. For the first 12 weeks of clinical training, students will be provided instruction on the correct and safe way to perform phlebotomy (blood draws) and EKGs. Also, in class students will receive training on the basic medical, lab, and exam procedures as well as fundamental patient care. Following the classroom experience, each student will complete a three week externship where they will get the opportunity to use their skills in a real-life setting in the field. After their successful completion of the program, students should be prepared to work in an entry-level position in a physician’s office, clinic, hospital, laboratory, or other medical setting.
The Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician courses are Introduction to Healthcare, Phlebotomy Techniques, and EKG Techniques. Each class is designed to cover a different aspect of the Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician program training to prepare students for certification and the healthcare field. Graduates of this program may become Medical Assistants by completing one additional course and the Medical Assistant externship.
A Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician is cross-trained in both Phlebotomy and EKG procedures and techniques including blood draws, specimen testing, infection control, how to operate and adjust EKG heart monitors, and how to understand the results of the electrocardiograph recordings. Cardio Phlebotomy Technicians have the opportunity to explore numerous healthcare environments. Those with prior CNA/HHA/EMT training may also qualify for the Patient Care Technician (PCT) certificate upon successful completion of training.

After successful completion of our Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician program (including externship), graduates will be eligible to take the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) national exam, to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPhT), and to take the national certification exam to become a Certified EKG Technician through the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians and/or the National Center for Competency Testing.

At the end of the classroom portion of the certificate Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician program, each student then begins their externship experience. During the externship, the student is placed by Health Training Center at a local facility where they can use their new skills and knowledge while getting hands-on experience in a healthcare site. In addition to benefiting the student, the externship is also an opportunity for employers to gauge a student's skills and how they may fit into an office or facility.
Many Cardio-Phlebotomy Technicians take on a dual role as they have been trained in the fundamentals of both Phlebotomy and EKG functions. The duties of a Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician may include, but are not limited to, applying and adjusting electrodes to a patient's body, operating the EKG machine, interpreting and reading the electrocardiograph recordings, checking quality of recorded data, assisting technologists and physicians during procedures, drawing blood, carrying out venipuncture procedures, and ensuring infection control.
A Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician can explore numerous healthcare employment environments. The most popular opportunities can be found in hospitals, clinics, emergency and trauma centers, private physician's offices, outpatient centers, and extended nursing care facilities.

Certification is the process by which a non-governmental association or agency grants recognition to an individual who has met certain predetermined qualifications specified by that association or agency.
While certification is optional it is highly recommended as most employers require it. The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians offers testing that awards the Certified Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician (CPT). Certified Cardio-Phlebotomy Technicians must obtain continuing education credits or complete certification management programs to maintain their status. Attaining certification through the ASPT is a great way to show your dedication to your profession as well as your professionalism. You will be able to present your certification to potential employers, making you a more desirable candidate for any health care position.
The ASPT examination can be scheduled at aspt.org. Health Training Center is affiliated with ASPT and proctors the exam for ASPT twice per year. We will notify graduates up to one year after graduation of the exam dates. The fee to apply for and take the exam is $90.
Yes. After completing the classroom portion of the program, Health Training Center will place all graduates from the Cardio Phlebotomy Technician program in a full-time Externship that will make up the final 120 hours of their education. In order to earn a certificate, each student must successfully complete the classroom, lab, and externship portions of the program.

The Medical Assistant program at Health Training Center can be completed in just 20 weeks. The program provides instruction on the clinical skills needed to work in entry-level positions in a variety of medical settings. Our students receive instruction on Phlebotomy, EKG, and clinical medical assisting techniques.
The Patient Care Technician program at Health Training Center is a career advancement program for a licensed CNA, HHA or EMT. If you are not licensed as a CNA, HHA or EMT, this program is available for you as a Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician.
The program can be completed in just 15 weeks. Students receive direction from experienced instructors on phlebotomy, EKGs, basic medical, lab and exam procedures, and basic patient care. Graduates of this program can become Clinical Medical Assistants by completing one additional course and the MA externship. Upon successful completion of the program, students should be prepared for entry-level job opportunities in a variety of medical settings.
The EKG Technician program at Health Training Center can be completed in just 8 weeks. Students will be instructed on how to operate and adjust EKG heart monitors, understand the results of the electrocardiogram (EKG) recording, and perform CPR. A graduate of this program should be prepared to work in an entry-level position in a variety of medical settings. The EKG Technician program requires two classes and can also be taken in combination with Phlebotomy or as part of the Medical Assistant Certificate.
The Phlebotomy Technician program at Health Training Center can be completed in just 11 weeks. The program provides instruction on the correct ways to draw blood in order than students complete the program prepared to work in entry-level positions in a variety of medical settings. Our students receive instruction on topics such as venipuncture procedures, specimen collection, blood collection, body systems, infection Control, and skin puncture techniques.
