The Clinical Medical Assistant Certificate program at Health Training Center can be completed in approximately 20 weeks. For the first 16 weeks, students receive instruction and practice clinical skills in the classroom and lab. After the class time, the final four weeks take place out in the field for an externship experience.
During the program, experienced instructors provide instruction on the clinical skills needed to work as a Medical Assistant. Some of these skills consist of phlebotomy (blood draws), performing an EKG (sometimes called an ECG), injections, physical exams, sterile techniques, medical terminology, exam room preparation, taking vital signs, and assessing patients. Our Medical Assistant program is focused entirely on the clinical technical requirements and requires four classes.
After successfully completing the program, students should be prepared to work in entry-level positions in a variety of medical settings like physicians’ offices, HMOs, clinics, and hospitals with inpatient and exam rooms.
Medical Assistants are a part of the healthcare team that performs clinical tasks to support the work of health professionals in a medical office, clinic, or healthcare facility.
At Health Training Center, we know that Medical Assistant certification is very important to potential employers as and becoming certified shows that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide excellent care as well as a high commitment to your field.
Upon successful program completion, students will have the opportunity to become a Nationally Registered Medical Assistant (RMA). Our program is pre-approved by The American Registry of Medical Assistants. Also, students are eligible to take the national certification exam to become a National Certified Medical Assistant through the National Center for Competency Testing.
Because our program provides comprehensive courses in Phlebotomy and EKG Techniques, students are instructed on skills necessary to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician and Certified EKG Technician through the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians and/or the National Center for Competency Testing. We proctor the exams several times a year at our classroom locations.

Health Training Center requires Clinical Medical Assistant Certificate program students to complete an externship in order to graduate. The externship is fundamental to the program for each student, providing them with the chance to perform the skills that they have been given instruction on in the classroom. The externship also provides employers an opportunity to assess students’ skills if they have the opportunity to hire following externship. Externships are part of the curriculum and guaranteed! Health Training Center will provide an externship site for each of their students. They are committed to helping their students toward success.
The Medical Assistant’s duties include preparing patients to be seen by the doctor, explaining upcoming medical and diagnostic procedures and rooming patients, taking their vital signs, preparing and positioning them for their exams, setting up instrument trays, performing skin, allergy and pregnancy tests, monitoring screening and therapeutic devices, assisting during examinations, maintaining equipment, performing necessary injections, and removing sutures and dressings. Proper medical office practice dictates that a Medical Assistant remains with a patient that has just received any form of medication, undergone allergy testing, is acutely ill, has seizures, pain, and/or bleeding, in order to observe, monitor, and minimize trauma to the patient. These incidents and the outcome must be charted in the patient’s medical record and reviewed by the supervising physician.
Medical assistants work alongside physicians, mainly in outpatient or ambulatory care facilities, such as medical offices and clinics, hospitals, emergency and trauma centers, private physicians offices, outpatient centers and extended nursing care facilities.
The Medical Assistant courses are Introduction to Healthcare, Phlebotomy Techniques, EKG Techniques/CPR, and Clinical Medical Assisting Techniques. Each of these courses are specifically designed to provide students will a different set of skills that will prepare them for certification and their future career in the healthcare field.
Graduates may choose to pursue to become a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). These designations merely depend on the organization to which she or he belongs. There is no qualitative difference between the two credentials of “Registered” and “Certified” title. All are a national credential that acknowledges the member as qualified to perform clinical duties of a traditional Medical Assistant.
Neither federal nor state governments currently require a Medical Assistant to be either Certified or Registered in order to perform Medical Assisting duties. No Medical Assisting certifying or registering organization has control over state laws and regulations. However, many physicians and medical facilities are requiring Medical Assistants to be Certified or Registered through either a state or national agency.
Benefits to becoming a registered Medical Assistant may include enhanced self-worth, improved job satisfaction, increased knowledge, and the ability to make a positive impact on patient care. Employers may trust that with ARMA registration, the registered Medical Assistant they work with have met predetermined qualifications proven by being approved by ARMA.
Upon completion of your medical assisting program, Health Training Center will provide you the information on how to register for the certified medical assisting exam. Students register directly through NCCT and provide proof of graduation. The exam fee is $90 and NCCT will provide a list of testing locations. Once certified, you will receive your NCCT national certified medical assistant card with your registration number and expiration date. To keep your credential valid, it will require you to take CEUs (continuing education units).
Yes. Health Training Center provides a 160 hour, full-time, unpaid Externship for all graduates in the Medical Assistant Certificate Program. This Externship is required to receive your Certificate and is provided after the successful completion of the classroom and lab coursework. You will be assigned an Externship Coordinator to assist you with your placement regarding scheduling and geographical area. It is our goal to place students as quickly as possible and to assign Externship sites as close to the student’s requested starting point as possible.

The Patient Care Technician program at Health Training Center is a career advancement program for a licensed CNA, HHA or EMT. If you are not licensed as a CNA, HHA or EMT, this program is available for you as a Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician.
The program can be completed in just 15 weeks. Students receive direction from experienced instructors on phlebotomy, EKGs, basic medical, lab and exam procedures, and basic patient care. Graduates of this program can become Clinical Medical Assistants by completing one additional course and the MA externship. Upon successful completion of the program, students should be prepared for entry-level job opportunities in a variety of medical settings.
The EKG Technician program at Health Training Center can be completed in just 8 weeks. Students will be instructed on how to operate and adjust EKG heart monitors, understand the results of the electrocardiogram (EKG) recording, and perform CPR. A graduate of this program should be prepared to work in an entry-level position in a variety of medical settings. The EKG Technician program requires two classes and can also be taken in combination with Phlebotomy or as part of the Medical Assistant Certificate.
The Health Training Center Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician program can be completed in just 15 weeks. The program focuses on cross-training students in Phlebotomy and EKG techniques. Graduates of this program may become Clinical Medical Assistants by completing one additional course and the Medical Assistant externship. Graduates of this program should be prepared for entry-level job opportunities in a variety of medical settings.
The Phlebotomy Technician program at Health Training Center can be completed in just 11 weeks. The program provides instruction on the correct ways to draw blood in order than students complete the program prepared to work in entry-level positions in a variety of medical settings. Our students receive instruction on topics such as venipuncture procedures, specimen collection, blood collection, body systems, infection Control, and skin puncture techniques.
